You more than likely remember "Billy Don't Be A Hero", but do you
remember "Who Do You Think You Are", a Top 15 hit? Nice!

TRIVIA: The two people who actually wrote "Who Do You Think You Are"
later formed a '70's pop group and scored a Top #3 hit. Can you name
this group and their hit song?

Now - I've really learned something here.

Being in the UK, the name "Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods" meant nothing to
me.

Over here, "Billy Don't Be A Hero" was a number 1 hit in March 1974 for the
group "Paper Lace".

"Who Do You Think You Are" was a number 21 hit around the same time for
"Candlewick Green" and then later, in May 1993 it reached number 23 for
"Saint Etienne" (which is a great version I think).

Now - the question is - which were the original (first) recordings/hits? The
UK hits or the US hits? When were these hits in the US?

I didn't know the Jigsaw connection either!

Excellent trivia :-)

Saw them on AB doing that song.

Another group with some interesting lineage was King Harvest.
This from Oldies.com

Formed in New York City, USA around 1972, King Harvest was best known
for its one US hit single, "Dancing In The Moonlight", in 1973. The band
comprised three keyboardists, Ron Altback, Sherman Kelly and Davy "Doc"
Robinson, plus Ed Tuleja (guitar), Tony Cahill (bass), Rod Novak
(saxophone) and David Montgomery (drums). All had been involved
previously with other bands and done session work. In 1972, they signed
to the small Perception label. Their first single was Altback's "Dancing
In The Moonlight", a soulful pop song that he and Robinson had performed
with their earlier band, Boffalongo. It reached number 13 in the US in
early 1973 but King Harvest's future singles were unable to match its
success. Only one other, "A Little Bit Like Magic", charted, reaching
number 91 in 1973. The original line-up recorded one album titled after
the hit single, which failed to break into the Top 100. They made other
singles, but by the mid-70s had disbanded. A new version, which included
four original members, was formed in 1976. With support from Beach Boys
members Carl Wilson and Mike Love, they were signed to A&M Records and
made another album, but, failing to achieve any hits, they subsequently
broke up. Tuleja played on Dennis Wilson's 1977 solo Pacific Ocean Blue,
while Altback and Robinson performed with Love in his band Celebration.

Neat! I think "Dancing In The Moonlight" was recorded in Paris!

I'd like to know what happened to Cliff Richard, since he was big in the
UK, for many years, but finally surfaced in the US, in the mid '70's!

In both cases, the UK version was the original. Paper Lace entered the
UK chart with 'Billy Don't Be A Hero' in Feb '74, and it was number
one throughout Europe and Australia. Donaldson & the Heywoods' version
of Billy didn't chart in the US until April '74. Similarly the
Candlewick Green version of 'Who Do You Think You Are' also charted in
the UK in Feb '74, and Bo's cover didn't chart in the US until August
'74. Makes you wonder why Bo didn't have a crack at 'The Night Chicago
Died'. ;o)

Don't really know, but, related, "The Night Chicago Died", by Paper Lace
scored #3 in the UK, and #1 in the US.

Just a trivia note. In the UK and Europe a band called Candlewick Green had the hit version of the song. Also, Paper Lace had the hit with Billy, Don't Be a Hero, just about everywhere else except the U.S.
