Not having much of a life, I was looking forward to choosing a ringtone for
my new cell phone that would tell the world just who I am.....oh boy. Slim
pickin's! Couldn't find anything from the 50s at all, only a few from the
60s and those were really banal. Finally found one of my 70s faves. So now
if you call me, "Brick House" by The Commodores will play. Boy does it
sound cheesy over the tiny little speaker! I think maybe I wasted $3.00
here.

Any of you have any exciting 70s-music ringtones?

Although I think there are limitations based on the type of phone you have,
I'll check with my youngest daughter. She is the queen of phone tone tunes.

Hmmm, not much in the way of oldies there either....I could have gotten "Car
Wash" by Rose Royce, but it appears this is a UK-only site. Tell your
daughter I said thanx.

The real problem is ring tones have no bottom, so anything funky ends
up sounding like 'Snoopy and the Red Baron'. Altec Lansing produce a
flat-panel 3-piece cell-phone speaker system consisting of two
tower-shaped satellites and a larger, more conventional-looking
subwoofer. Each 25-watt satellite encloses four 28-millimeter
flattened-dome microdrivers capable of full midrange sound mounted
atop a 8-inch midbass speaker. The subwoofer has a 18-inch
downward-firing cone (based upon the old Ampeg B-18 Bass amplifier)
and a 55-watt amplifier. Three adjustable knobs on the right
satellite control overall volume, bass, and treble. Now 'Brick House'
will sound the way it should! You can purchase a nifty transport cart
in a range of colours or 'make do' with a borrowed shopping trolley.

I would opt for something totally annoying. Ask Bruce to suggest one
of his bubble gum favourites.

No, if I wanted totally annoying, the Bee Gees are readily available. I
loathe the Bee Gees far more than any bubble gum.

I meant annoying to others around you when it 'rings'. Isn't that
part of the fun of cellphones?

Well....I don't know what "Ballroom Blitz" is.....but I'd definitely settle
for "Blitzkrieg Bop."

Hello Diane and NG:

I am happy to provide ringtones, polyphonic or monophonic, in *.MMF
format. Including 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's *lesser-known* songs.

Just give the title you want, and the desired length of the ringtone.

"Brick House" and some other tunes are more difficult to program,
because many aspects of the melody are not necessarily melodic (ie.,
with discrete pitches); they're more of a "chant". But I'll happily
give it a stab.

My big question regarding MIDI-based ringtones is this: What MIDI
musical data is translated into the ringtone file?

i.e., Velocity? Expression? Volume? Program Changes?
Is Channel 10 reserved for Drumkit (as in General MIDI)?

The implication here is, no need to labor over note Velocities if they
will just be filtered out in the ringtone file.

There are even proggies out there that supposedly can "listen" to a WAV or
MP3 file and translate it into a MIDI file, and from thence it should
be easy to convert it into an MMF file with the proper program.... But
I have my doubts as to well these programs "listen"... I suspect the
end MIDI result will sound like the "dog's breakfast"...

Comments? Personal experiences? Further information here?

Thanks, Dave B.

All MIDI data is passed along to the phone. It depends on the phone whether
it actually uses all of the info.
I had a Sprint PCS phone for a couple of years and it (made by Sanyo) used
all of the MDI info (Velocity, Expression, Volume and even the drumkit).
I literally uploaded midi filed into the phone and they became ringers.
I now have a Nextel phone (made by Motorola) and I haven't had it long
enough to play with ringers. I am using the ringers that came with the
phone now but I will explore the other possibilities when I get some free
time.

If you have a Sprint PCS phone, I have a great version of the Doobie Bros.
"Listen To The Music" I uploaded to www.mbuzzy.com a couple of years ago.
Last time I checked it was still there.

It's not there now.

I previewed a number of their ringtones for songs I like (e.g. "Sweet Home
Alabama" and several Beatles songs), and I didn't like the MIDI versions at
all. They sounded anemic.
