Recently a friend of mine lost her mother to cancer. Now she is
helping raise money for the American Cancer Society through various
projects, one of which needs a list of rock stars who've either died
of cancer or survived it. "Rock stars" should be loosely interpreted
to mean any well-known musical celebrity.

Some cancer deaths have included:

Ray Peterson ("Tell Laura I Love Her" & "Corrina, Corrina")
Jim Capaldi
Floyd Cramer (pianist)
Nicky Hopkins (pianist)
Richard Tee (pianist)
Carl Wilson ("The Beach Boys")

A cancer survivor:

Rod Stewart (survived thyroid cancer)

Even though this is a sad subject, I ask everyone's help in compiling
this list, in the hope that it'll help save future lives. Please add
to this list all the names you can think of.

Thanks.

I think Doc Pomus died of cancer, and was partially the inspiration for Lou
Reed's album Magic And Loss, a highly praised concept album about losing
someone close to you to cancer.

And the other great rocker whose name starts with "Z"--Warren Zevon.

Looks like Bob Zimmerman was smart to change his name, eh?

I thought the person who sang "It's Gonna Take A Lotta Love" in the mid 70s
died from cancer.

I think you're right, though her name doesn't come to me at this time either.

I think what you'll find is that those who lived long enough, ie drugs
didn't kill them, or barring accidents (dying in a plane crash, lights
toppling onto you, etc), cancer may be a significant cause of death.

Minnie Riperton died of cancer. SPencer Dryden died of cancer just
a few weeks ago. Bob Marley in 1981. Laura Nyro in 1997.

It may be easier to start thinking of who died, and then see if this
scenario fits.
